Should You Play Explicit Music at Your Wedding?

When planning your wedding playlist, it is easy to focus on songs you enjoy. A lot of popular songs today include explicit lyrics, and it is something we get asked about quite a bit.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that your wedding includes a wide mix of guests. You may have family, older guests, kids, coworkers, and friends all in the same space. A song that feels normal with friends can feel very different in that setting.

Timing also plays a big role. For cocktail hour and dinner, clean music helps create a comfortable atmosphere for everyone. It keeps things relaxed and appropriate while guests are arriving, eating, and talking.

As the night goes on and the dance floor fills up, there may be more flexibility depending on your crowd. Some groups are totally fine with more energetic or edgy music later in the evening, while others prefer to keep things clean the entire time.

Most songs have clean versions that keep the same energy without the explicit words. In many cases, guests do not even notice the difference. What they do notice is whether the music feels right for the moment and whether they are comfortable being on the dance floor.

Our goal as your DJ is to create a fun and comfortable experience for everyone. We typically use clean versions earlier in the evening and adjust as the night progresses based on the crowd and your preferences.

If there are specific songs you want included, we will always work with you to make sure they fit naturally into the flow of your wedding.
