When Should You Do Your First Dances at Your Wedding?

When planning your wedding timeline, there are a lot of ways to structure the evening. There is no single “right” way to do it, and we are always happy to work with whatever timeline feels best for you.
That said, from experience, there are certain approaches that tend to keep the flow of the night more natural and the energy stronger.
Our Recommendation
We typically recommend completing the traditional and formal moments before opening up the dance floor.
This may include:
First dance
Parent dances
Bouquet toss (if you are doing one)
Garter toss (if you are doing one)
Once those are done, you can move straight into open dancing and keep things going without interruption.
Why This Works So Well
When the dance floor opens, that is when the energy really starts to build.
If you stop shortly after to do formal events like a bouquet or garter toss, it can:
Break the momentum
Clear the dance floor
Make it harder to get people re-engaged
By taking care of those moments earlier, it allows the dancing portion of the night to feel more continuous and natural.
Keeping the Momentum Going
Once guests are out on the dance floor, the goal is to keep that energy moving.
A steady flow of music without pauses for additional events helps:
Keep guests engaged
Maintain a full dance floor
Create a more seamless experience
This is often when the night feels the most fun and memorable.
What If You Want to Add Something Later?
If you do want to include something later in the evening, there are ways to bring people back onto the dance floor without slowing things down.
One great option is an anniversary dance, especially a reverse anniversary dance.
This is a fun way to:
Get guests back on the dance floor
Involve couples of all ages
Create a meaningful moment without disrupting the flow too much
It works well because it brings people in rather than stopping the energy completely.
We Will Always Work With Your Vision
Every wedding is different, and your timeline should reflect what matters most to you.
If you prefer to space things out or structure your evening differently, we will absolutely support that and help it run smoothly.
Our role is to guide you based on what we have seen work well, while making sure your day feels exactly how you want it to.
Final Thoughts
Planning your timeline is all about balance. Taking care of the formal moments early and then letting the dance floor open up fully is one of the best ways to keep the night flowing and the energy high.
If you are unsure how to structure your evening, we are always happy to help you map it out.
